The line between Plymouth and Bere Alston is the remaining western stump of the former LSWR main line from Exeter, while the section from Bere Alston to Calstock and Gunnislake is the remaining section of the Plymouth Devonport and South Western Junction Railway branch to Callington.  There are plans to reopen the former as far as Tavistock, while reopening the whole route through to Okehampton (which already has a rail connection with Exeter) would provide a valuable back-up to the ex-GWR Sea Wall route which appears increasingly susceptible  to storm damage.
